Edwards & Son Funeral Services was established in 1918 by Charles Edwards. A joiner by trade, Charles first set up a building business on Jamage Road in Talke Pits. His work led him to make coffins and help families lay out their loved ones at home, as was customary at the time. Coffins were then taken by handcart or horse and trap to a local church or chapel for the funeral service and burial.

In 1945, the building and funeral businesses moved to new premises on High Street, Talke Pits. Charles’s son Frank had joined the company, and Frank’s sons, also named Frank and David, later followed him into the family business.

After Frank senior died in 2001, his son Frank continued to run both businesses with the help of his daughter Gail. In 2005, the family used its building company to create a new Chapel of Rest, offering families a comfortable and peaceful place to spend time with their loved ones.

Gail and her husband Paul Spender took over the funeral side of the business in 2008, continuing a tradition of care that had passed through four generations of the Edwards family.

Today, C. Edwards & Son is owned by the Jepson family, who bring five generations of experience in funeral directing from across Derbyshire. We are proud to continue the personal service that Charles Edwards began more than a century ago, while caring for the business and the families it serves into the future.
